Mark Levell was born in Great Bradley, Suffolk in 1883 (Risbridge Q4-1883 4A:592), son of James and Sarah LEVELL, (née WOOLLARD).

1891 census...Aged 7, he was at Cottage, The Green, Kirtling with his father James LEVELL [46] farm labourer; his mother Sarah [41]; brothers Sam [17] and Jesse [15], both farm labourers, born in Kirtling, and brother William [12] also born in Kirtling; sisters Alice [9] and Elizabeth B [4] were both born in Great Bradley.

1901 census...Aged 17, a farm labourer, he was still at the same house with his parents, brother William (horseman) and sister Elizabeth B.

1911 census...Aged 27, a farm labourer, he was at Yew Tree Farm, Kirtling, with his parents (father now recorded as farmer) and sister Elizabeth, now Mrs DAVEY with her husband William DAVEY [25] a blacksmith, born Honnington, and their two children Bertha [4] and William [5 months] both born in Kirtling. 3 of Sarah's 8 children had died.

He enlisted in Kirtling.
It was just four days after Thiepval was finally taken by the Allies. The 8th East Surreys were tasked with taking the Schwaben Redoubt, this despite being low on numbers. There is a mass of information, far too much for here, on here , the East Surrey war diaries are most comprehensive.

48 of the 69 men of the 8th East Surreys who died that day have no known grave. Mark Levell was found with 2 chums (1 unidentified) and re-interred in Connaught Cemnetery in 1919
